The Ring of Gullion area is a unique natural landform formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. Slieve Gullion is the eroded heart of the volcano, and the ring dyke was formed by molten rock erupting from fractures in the earth that surrounded it. Slieve Gullion mountain stands tall in the ring of low hills and is the tallest peak in Armagh. However, Slieve Gullion is more than just a mountain. It is home to a wide range of wildlife and plants, and known for many myths and legends, including stories about Fionn Mac Cumhaill, Cúchulainn and the Cailleach Beara. Killeavy Castle sits at the base of Slieve Gullion, and is a gateway to discovering the beauty and mystery the Ring of Gullion has to offer.
